GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith forwards Sophie Dennis (Dana L. West/Port Byron, N.Y.) and Maggie Dolan (Towson/Towson, Md.) were named to the 2005 Dartfish/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America first-team today. Both are making their second straight appearance on the All-America teams.
“It’s well deserved recognition for two wonderful players, and it’s a positive reflection on our program as a whole,” Head Coach Sally Scatton said. “Maggie leaves this school as one of the program’s top scorers and when Sophie moves on she’ll leave a legacy that will be difficult to match.
“The two of them together are one of the most explosive scoring duos in Division III.”
In fact, only four of the 154 Division III schools that sponsor field hockey had a tandem that scored more points than Dennis and Dolan this season. Together they combined for 101 points on 43 goals (including 10 of the Herons’ 17 game-winners) and 15 assists.
Dennis, a junior, led the Liberty League in goals (22), assists (13), and points (57) in 2005. Her points total is the second highest single season mark in Heron history. The 2005 Liberty League Player of the Year is William Smith’s career goals and points leader with 61 tallies and 25 helpers for 147 points. Dennis was a first-team All-American in 2004 and is a three-time NFHCA All-North Atlantic pick.
Dolan, a senior, scored 21 goals and assisted on two others for 44 points this season, the fifth highest single season total in William Smith history. She ranked second in the Liberty League in goals and points behind Dennis. A three-year starter, Dolan finished her career with 42 goals and 18 assists for 102 points. She ranks eighth in career goals and 11th in career points. Dolan was a third-team All-American in 2004 and is a three-time first-team All-North Atlantic selection.
The high scoring tandem led William Smith to a 17-4 record, including an unblemished 7-0 mark in conference play. The Herons won the Liberty League Tournament Championship and reached the NCAA Division III Tournament Quarterfinals. One of the top field hockey program’s in the nation, the Herons made their 19th consecutive postseason appearance in 2005
